This service is the best choice for all suspected Carbonaceous Chondrites.

ATTENTION IMPORTANT NOTICE - Additional fee of $200 may apply. There are often instances when it may be necessary to do oxygen isotope analysis to distinguish the exact classification for some carbonaceous chondrites. This is necessary when data from the microprobe is indeterminate, anomalous, or intersecting two or more subtypes. We cannot foresee this requirement, and it is determined on a sample by sample basis after initial microprobe analysis has been completed.

Service includes the following:

  • Sample Prep - Making of one 25mm probe mount required for microprobe analysis, and one petrographic thin section when needed. These remain with the Institute of Meteoritics for archival and future use.

  • Type Donation Processing & Management - According to the rules set forth by the Meteoritical Society, 20 grams or 20% of the total known weight of the specimens (TKW), whichever is less, must be donated to an approved repository in order to receive an official name, and have it published in the Meteoritical Bulletin. NMMS will verify, approve, and transfer the Type Donation to the UNM Institute of Meteoritics' Meteoritical Society approved repository. Click here for a more complete explanation of this requirement.

  • Microprobe Analysis - Specimen specific analysis determined by the classifying researcher and the microprobe lab manager.

  • Classification, Write-up & Submission - Synthesis of the microprobe data into an accurate, well formed, and defensible classification for inclusion and submission to the Nomenclature Committee for approval, official name, and publication in the Meteoritical Bulletin.

  • Report - A customized comprehensive paper and digital report with USB archive of all assets associated with the sample, analysis, and classification.
